SpaceX and a 150-meter Starship hop attempt

Space Coast, FL – Yesterday at ~1956 EDT SpaceX made another attempt in their 150m hop of their Starship SN5 prototype. But first, what is “Starship”?

SpaceX’s Starship spacecraft and Super Heavy rocket (collectively referred to as Starship) represent a fully reusable transportation system designed to carry both crew and cargo to Earth orbit, the Moon, Mars and beyond. Starship will be the world’s most powerful launch vehicle ever developed, with the ability to carry in excess of 100 metric tonnes to Earth orbit.

SpaceX has been making full progress and at full speed ahead for this project. Starting with Mk1, Mk2 and Mk3, later renamed to SN1. Many SN (Serial Number) Starships have been through rigorous pressure tests to the extent of destruction. Though, blowing up a Starship may seem like an oopsie, all the tests have been just what SpaceX needs to perfect the final prototype.

The Hop

So we come to yesterday. In Boca Chica, Texas, Starship SN 5, lifted off for a 150 meter hop. Using one (1) Raptor engine the Starship took flight up 150 meters and over to the landing pad on SpaceX grounds. The Raptor engine is a reusable methalox staged-combustion engine that powers the Starship launch system. In July of 2019 it became the first full-flow staged combustion rocket engine ever flown. But that’s another story.

Congratulations Elon Musk and SpaceX teams on this successful hop. We are that much closer now to Mars than ever before.
